New, self-built computer : Under construction

Posted by Mich Jun. 4, 2009 @ 3:44 PM EDT

I finally got around taking some time to assemble my own computer (choosing all the parts myself, and putting the whole thing together.

I made a list of components fro the beast, and now started getting all the pieces. The biggest deal will be purchased in a while, but I just want to make a little newspost and post updates about the 'project'.

The system will be running windows XP professional, which uses far less system resources than Windows xp. This so I can get the max out of the computer for my music production.

Anyway, here goes the component list + statuses.

Computer Case : Mad X Black + 550W Power supply -> Bought, put aside for when I've got everything. PIC

Motherboard: ASUS P5QL PRO -> Not ordered yet.

Processor: Intel core i7-920 -> Not ordered yet.

Memory: 3x Kingston Valueram memory 2GB (DDR2) => 6GB total -> Not ordered yet.

Storage: HDD/Cuda 7200.11 320GB SATA -> Not ordered yet.

CD/DVD : Asus DVD Rw 22x Dual layer (IDE) -> Not ordered yet.

Graphics: ASUS EN8400GS -> Not ordered yet.

CPU Cooling: Cooler Master Hyper TX2 -> Not ordered yet.

Mouse: Logitech MX400 -> Not ordered yet.

Keyboard: Logitech Wave Keyboard: Bought, typing this with it now.

All those things that say 'Not ordered yet' will probably be ordered at once, somewhere during the next few weeks/months. See how things turn out.

How much will all that cost? (Im thinking of doing something similar)

Jun. 5, 2009 | 9:30 PM Mich responds:

I got to about EU750.

Good luck, and make sure to check every part is compatible with the other (think memory and processor sockets)

Ah, like gathering PC's too? I usually help an older guy, going shopping with him and choosing parts. Anyway good luck, the processor should rock.

Jun. 12, 2009 | 7:20 AM Mich responds:

Yeah I read quite a bit about that processor.
It's my first time building a pc on my own, so I hope it turns out well =)

Kinda heavy power supply...

Jun. 15, 2009 | 2:31 PM Mich responds:

It's delivered with the case (which should arrive today)

And who knows what I (being an electronics guy) will connect extra to it... :p

Why are you buying a good cooler, if you aren't going to game?

Jul. 6, 2009 | 4:02 PM Mich responds:

My cpu will be under heavy load because of audio production.

Terrible specs. Won't run anything. Try again.

By the way, the i7 processors are LGA1366, not LGA775, and the 920 you're looking at will not work with the motherboard you picked out. You're gonna have to shell out a lot more bucks for an LGA1366 motherboard. Same with the heatsink you wanted. It's not compatible with LGA1366. The 8400GS you want is a piece of crap video card. It's not really strong in any areas and barely qualifies for even watching videos. It'll most likely bottleneck your other components. If you're getting an i7 processor then you'll have to shell out for a PSU that has an 8-pin CPU power connector, because the LGA1366 motherboards are very power-hungry. As for the RAM, you'll also have to buy DDR3 RAM in order to use an i7 processor, which is very expensive, mind you.

Figured you'd have posted this here also, after reading the pm.
Thanks for the headsup, I'll update it later.

Oh also, wait for Windows 7 to become released before you build your PC. It's really nice. I've tried the RC (release candidate).
